Motion Sensor Technology Types: PIR, Microwave, and Dual-Tech

Published on February 15, 2026 | By Berkley Security Inc.

Motion sensors are the interior backbone of any alarm system, detecting human movement inside your property when the system is armed. But the technology inside these sensors varies significantly, and choosing the wrong type for your environment leads to either missed detections or chronic false alarms.

Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensors

PIR sensors remain the most common residential motion detection technology. They detect changes in infrared radiation (body heat) against the ambient temperature of a room. When a warm body moves across the sensor's field of view, the temperature differential triggers the alarm. PIR sensors are energy-efficient, reliable, and inexpensive. However, they can be fooled by rapid temperature changes from heating vents or direct sunlight.

Microwave Sensors

Microwave sensors emit continuous microwave pulses and measure the reflection. Any movement in the coverage area alters the reflected pattern, triggering the alarm. Unlike PIR sensors, microwave sensors detect motion through thin walls and are unaffected by temperature fluctuations. However, they are more prone to false alarms from non-human movement like curtains blowing.

Dual-Technology Sensors

Dual-tech sensors combine both PIR and microwave detection in a single unit. The alarm triggers only when both technologies detect motion simultaneously. This dramatically reduces false alarms while maintaining high detection reliability. Dual-tech sensors are the premium choice for commercial environments and residential spaces with challenging conditions.
