NVR vs DVR: Choosing the Right Video Recorder for Your System
Published on January 31, 2026 | By Berkley Security Inc.
The recorder is the brain of your surveillance system, storing and managing footage from all your cameras. Two fundamentally different technologies exist: DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and NVR (Network Video Recorder). Understanding their differences is essential for making the right investment.
DVR Systems: Analog Heritage
DVR systems receive analog video signals over coaxial cable from analog cameras. The DVR itself handles all video processing and encoding. DVR systems are generally less expensive and work well for basic surveillance needs. However, they are limited by coaxial cable distance, lower maximum resolutions compared to IP systems, and less flexibility in camera positioning.
NVR Systems: IP Network Power
NVR systems receive digital video streams over Ethernet from IP cameras. Each camera processes its own video before transmitting it digitally to the NVR. This architecture supports higher resolutions (4K and beyond), longer cable runs (up to 300 feet per standard Ethernet segment, extendable with switches), Power-over-Ethernet (eliminating separate power cables), and advanced analytics at the camera level.
Which Should You Choose?
For new installations, NVR systems are the clear choice. They offer superior image quality, simpler cabling, greater scalability, and more advanced features. DVR systems may still make sense when upgrading an existing property that already has coaxial cable infrastructure in place and the budget does not support complete recabling.
