Surround Sound Formats Explained: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and More

Published on January 22, 2026 | By Berkley Security Inc.

The world of surround sound formats can be bewilderingly complex. Numbers like 5.1, 7.2.4, and brand names like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X get thrown around in marketing materials without much explanation. Understanding what these formats actually deliver helps you invest wisely in your home theater audio system.

Traditional Channel-Based Surround

5.1 Surround Sound uses five full-range speakers (front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right) plus one subwoofer. This format has been the standard for decades and remains the baseline for home theater audio. 7.1 adds two additional rear surround speakers for more enveloping coverage behind the listener.

Object-Based Audio: Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos represents a fundamental shift in audio design. Instead of assigning sounds to specific channels, Atmos positions individual audio objects in three-dimensional space, including overhead. A helicopter flying over your head in a movie actually sounds like it is traveling across your ceiling. This requires adding height speakers (in-ceiling or upward-firing) to your existing surround layout, expressed in configurations like 5.1.2 or 7.2.4 (the third number indicates height speakers).

DTS:X: The Open Alternative

DTS:X is a competing object-based format that offers similar immersive audio without requiring specific speaker placements. DTS:X adapts to whatever speaker configuration you have, making it more flexible for rooms where ideal speaker placement is not possible.
