Moving to a New Home? What to Do with Your Security System
Published on January 20, 2026 | By Berkley Security Inc.
Moving to a new home raises important questions about your existing security system. Can you take it with you? Should you leave it for the buyer? What should you do at the new home? Making the right decisions protects both your current and future properties.
At Your Current Home
- Hardwired Systems: Sensors, cameras, and wiring embedded in your walls are considered fixtures and typically stay with the home. Removing them could damage walls and create buyer disputes.
- Wireless Components: Wireless sensors, keypads, and cameras are generally considered personal property and can be taken with you, though check your sales contract.
- Cancel or Transfer Monitoring: Notify your monitoring company immediately. If the buyer wants to keep the system active, your provider can transfer the monitoring agreement.
At Your New Home
- Change All Codes: If the home has an existing alarm system, change every code immediately. Previous owners, their family members, and past service providers may still have the old codes.
- Professional System Assessment: Have a professional evaluate any existing system for functionality, coverage gaps, and outdated components before investing in monitoring.
- Consider a Fresh Start: A new custom system designed specifically for your new home's layout often provides better coverage than inheriting the previous owner's configuration.
